Camshafts & Lifters

The camshaft is often referred to as the "brain" of the engine. Choosing the correct camshaft for a specific application can be one of the most difficult parts of an engine build. It's also one area where no amount of "catalog research," or "bench racing" can begin to substitute for actual experience running many different cam profiles in specific types of engine combinations in "real life." By real life, we mean on the dyno AND the race track.

Camshaft, lifters, pushrods, and valvesprings- everything in the valve train system is part of a complex science of mechanical engineering. Over the years, we've run cams from virtually all of the major cam manufacturers. We have several in house test engines we've used as mules over the years to test a multitude of different parts. We sat down and reviewed and analyzed many of the engines we've built, and what we came up with is that the ones which were running the Comp cams not only made more power, they were much more streetable and drivable as well. The Comps would idle smoother and have more vacuum than other manufacturers' cams would, even when the Comps had ten degrees more duration and twenty or thirty thousandths more lift! And during assembly, the lobe separation angles were always dead on, degreeing always went exactly as it should, and over the last couple years, we found ourselves running Comps in every motor we build. After referring hundreds or even thousands of customers over to Comp, it only made sense we start carrying them ourselves.

While there are many smaller companies that claim to specialize in "Mopar only" camshafts, the truth is, in R&D and technology, no small "Mopar only" business can even begin to match the resources which Comp has at their disposal. Hundreds of employees, teams of engineers working at the highest levels of Nascar and NHRA, four full time dyno cells at their facility, millions of dollars in cutting edge manufacturing equipment and machinery, and over 30 years of doing business have made them the undisputed leader in camshaft technology. This translates directly into unmatched performance and reliability. No "Mopar only" shop with a small handful of employees can match even a small fraction of these types of resources.

We carry several Comp grinds below, (all normally kept on the shelf and ready to ship the same day) from a "just bigger than stock" .462" lift, all the way to their biggest hydraulic for aluminum headed stroker engines, the extreme energy high lift .564". Feel free to give us a call and we'll help select the right cam for your application.

Our favorite Comp grind, the .564" lift Xtreme Energy Hi-Lift Hydraulic cam, is the one we've used most in our 500 or 512 stroker motors, and it never ceases to amaze us how much power this thing makes, and still idles like a kitten at 800 RPM! With relatively mild aluminum heads such as Edelbrock RPM's or our Stealth heads, in a 500 or 512 inch stroker, this cam almost always makes somewhere in the mid 500 horsepower range (540-560), and idles smoother (and is more drivable) than a typical "Mopar .509" cam would be in a non stroked 440. Most stroker engines will find a nice wide power band of about 2500-6500 with this cam. We'd use about a 3000-3200 stall, and some decent rear end gears (3.55-4.10 for the street.) With 251 degrees of duration at .050" on the intake and 257 on the exhaust, these are ground on a 110 degree lobe separation angle. For serious street strip cars (especially 500+ strokers), this cam has some awesome top end capability, and like we said above, the best part is that it does it without sacrificing idle quality and driveability. This baby is STRONGLY recommended. We can't tell you how many people have called us back and can't believe the results they've gotten using this cam with one of our 500+ stroker kits.

We feel the three bolt timing chain attaching system is far superior to the single bolt, and so we offer this cam to fit only three bolt timing chain sets. We carry them (along with the required bolts, etc.) on our timing chains page. Don't forget to order Comp lifters and break-in lube (shown below) with your new cam! These items are considered essential to ensure that your cam has the longest possible life and is fully covered under Comp's warranty policy. And, since this is Comp we're talking about, you can be assured of two things: The product is 100% made in the USA, and the quality is second to none.

Part No: 145-1229 - Comp Cam Xtreme Energy Hi-Lift .564" - Price: $139.95

For those who want something slightly more docile then the above cam, or who have a slightly smaller cubic inch engine (in the 440-470 range) the .545" lift Comp Extreme Energy Hi-Lift cam is a great choice. With duration at .050" of 241 on the intake and 247 on the exhaust, while still keeping the 110 degree lobe separation, this makes for a very streetable cam without giving up top end horsepower. In a 500+ stroker setup, the power band will start to come in around 2000 RPM, and pull hard up until about 6000, depending on the heads, etc. In a stock displacement engine, add about 500 more RPM to those numbers. We'd run a 2500-2800 stall converter with this one, along with a decent gear (at least 3.55's.) We feel the three bolt timing chain attaching system is far superior to the single bolt, and so we offer this cam to fit only three bolt timing chain sets.

Part No: 145-1228 - Comp Cam Xtreme Energy Hi-Lift .545" - Price: $139.95

For a good stroker "in-between" cam, (for those who want more than just "slightly" warmed over), but still need all around good street performance AND are limited on their converter or rear end gears, etc. this is a great way to go. If the car is going to see the dragstrip more than once or twice a year, we'd probably go a step or two above this one. In a 500+ stroker setup, you'll get a nice wide power band from just off idle to about 5500 RPM, and you could probably squeak by with using a stock converter, although a 2200+ wouldn't hurt. With 231 degrees of duration at .050" on the intake and 237 on the exhaust, these are ground on a 110 degree lobe separation angle. We'd use this with a performer RPM intake (not quite big enough for single planes yet) and at least 9 to 1 compression.

Part No: 145-1227 - Comp Cam Xtreme Energy Hi-Lift .525" - Price: $139.95

For engines which are mostly used in high performance street applications and don't see the racetrack too much, we recommend this Comp Extreme Energy .507/.510. This is a great replacement for the old "Mopar purple shaft .509" It's similar lobe specs and slightly extra "duration per lift" ratio help to preserve the flat, wide torque curve and top end power we all remember from the .509" Mopar, but Comp's 30 years of manufacturing technology have tweaked the lobes a bit to give you much faster rates of lift. This helps to increase the low end response and driveability over the original .509" and gives you more vacuum, and the ability to use a lower stall converter, although we'd still run a 2800+ in a stock displacement engine, or a 2500+ in a stroker. Duration at .050" comes in at 240 on the intake and 246 on the exhaust, and it's on a 110 degree lobe separation angle. For a high performance 500+ inch stroker application, this is probably the smallest cam you'd want to go with. In a stock displacement application, the power band on this cam will be about 2300-6500 RPM, in a stroker that will usually lower to about 1800-6000 RPM, depending on the heads and other parts of the combination.

Part No: 145-1225 - Comp Cam Xtreme Energy .507/.510" - Price: $139.95

For stock displacement engines which are mostly used in high performance street applications and don't see the racetrack too much, we recommend this Comp Extreme Energy .488/.491. This is a great replacement for the old "Mopar purple shaft .484" It's similar lobe specs preserve the strong midrange torque we all remember from the .484" Mopar, but Comp's 30 years of manufacturing technology have tweaked the lobes to give you much faster rates of lift. This helps to increase the low end response and driveability over the .484" and gives you a much cleaner idle, more vacuum, and the ability to use a lower stall converter, (such as a 2200+.) Power band of this cam in a stock displacement engine will be about 1800-6000 RPM. We generally don't recommend this one in a 500+ stroker, for the vast majority of these applications, it's just going to be too small. Duration at .050" comes in at 230 on the intake and 236 on the exhaust, and it's on a 110 degree lobe separation angle.

Part No: 145-1224 - Comp Cam Xtreme Energy .488/.491" - Price: $139.95

For those who are looking for just a step above stock, but want to retain the stock torque converter, stock cylinder heads, etc, this cam is the way to go. It's also a great choice for towing, RV use, etc. With a nice broad power band of about 1600-5800 RPM, this cam will give your engine a "slightly rough idle," just enough so people can tell you've "got something under the hood," but it will do it without losing hardly any of the low end response and drivability of a factory high performance cam. Duration at .050" comes in at a nice docile 224 degrees on the intake and 230 on the exhaust, and it's on a 110 degree lobe separation angle. We would NOT recommend this cam for ANY stroker setups, it's going to be way too small.

Part No: 145-1223 - Comp Cam Xtreme Energy .477/.480" - Price: $139.95

For those who are doing restorations, and looking for a near exact replacement for the factory "Magnum HP" cams, and want to retain the factory torque converter, stock cylinder heads, rear end gears, etc, this cam is the way to go. With a nice broad power band of about 1300-5600 RPM, this cam won't sacrifice the gas mileage, low end response and drivability of a factory high performance cam. Although the lobe specs are similar to a factory HP cam at .462" on the intake and .470" on the exhaust, because this cam is part of the Xtreme Energy family, Comp's 30 years of manufacturing technology have tweaked them slightly to give you somewhat faster rates of lift. This helps to actually increase the low end response and driveability over the original factory HP cams, and give you a wider torque curve with more power. Duration at .050" comes in at a very docile 218 on the intake and 224 on the exhaust, and it's on a 110 degree lobe separation angle. We would definitely not recommend this cam for any stroker setups ever, it would be way, way too small. This is the only cam we offer that works with a single bolt timing chain setup.

Part No: 145-1222 - Comp Cam Xtreme Energy .462/.470" - Price: $139.95

Not all lifters are created equal. Comp's High Energy hydraulic lifters are produced with a longer piston than conventional lifters, and also feature a lightweight check valve disc that allows for quicker response, and added oil control at all engine speeds and loads. Use these Comp High Energy Hydraulic lifters with all of our High Energy hydraulic cams listed above, UNLESS the engine will see above 5000 RPM. Above 5000 RPM (or for any type of racing applications,) we highly recommend their Pro Magnum Lifters shown below. At these higher RPM's Comp has done extensive testing. They have found not only were the Pro-Magnums good for about 10-15 more horsepower, but they also do not succumb to lifter "pump-up," a condition where the internal piston inside the lifter can fill up with oil and not have enough time to drain or "bleed down." This can result in the piston being in an improper position as it "pumps up," which can lead to holding valves open, which in turn can lead to greatly reduced power output, or in some cases (if that open valve happens to strike a piston top) there can be extreme engine failure. These lifters are considered essential to ensure that your cam has the longest possible life and is fully covered under Comp's warranty policy. And, since this is Comp we're talking about, you can be assured of two things: The product is 100% made in the USA, and the quality is second to none.

Part No: 145-1000 - Comp Cams High Energy Hydraulic Lifters - Set of 16 - Price: $99.95

Comp's Pro Magnum premium hydraulic lifters are the recommended choice for all the Comp Hydraulic cams we sell above. These are mandatory for any type of racing use, or in any application in which the engine will see over 5000 RPM. These must be used with an adjustable type of valve train, such as adjustable rocker arms (preferably roller rockers) along with the associated pushrods required. These lifters are considered essential to ensure that your cam has the longest possible life and is fully covered under Comp's warranty policy. And, since this is Comp we're talking about, you can be assured of two things: The product is 100% made in the USA, and the quality is second to none.

Part No: 145-1001 - Comp Cams Pro Magnum Hydraulic Lifters - Set of 16 - Price: $119.95

Along with the purchase of any Comp cam and lifters, we also strongly recommend using Comp's engine break in oil additive. It is essential to make sure your cam and lifters are fully covered under Comp's warranty. It's a well known fact that, due to EPA regulations and other reasons, over the last few years oil manufacturers have removed the Zinc and other additives from their motor oil. If you try to break in a brand new cam and just add regular "off the shelf" motor oil from your local parts store, it is VERY likely you will have a failure. You must add this additive to the oil to replenish the zinc which is no longer included by the oil manufacturers. This works with synthetics, blended, and standard petroleum oils. In our own engines, we usually get a couple extra bottles to keep on the shelf and add one at every oil change. It's cheap insurance.

THIS PRODUCT CAN ONLY BE SHIPPED BY REGULAR GROUND SHIPPING (Sorry, no International orders.)

Part No: 145-1004 - Comp Cams Engine Break In Oil Additive - Price: $14.95

Our new Solid Roller lifters are a great value! These feature a solid lifter body, without an oil band in the middle of the lifter. In Big Block Mopar engines, with certain cams, solid roller lifters with a "cut" in the middle of the lifter body can uncover the oil galley and cause oil pressure issues. We made sure that won't be an issue here. A nice set, comparable to the name brand lifters at a fraction of the cost.

Part No: 200-1118 - Solid Roller Lifters - Set of 16 - Price: $199.95

Our new Hydraulic Roller Retrofit lifters are designed to allow you to run a modern hydraulic roller cam in your Mopar Big Block engine. Say goodbye forever to flat lobes, cam break-in, oil additives, etc. Hydraulic rollers have become standard in Detroit's offerings for a few years now, and now the aftermarket is finally getting with the program. Not only are these the ultimate in reliability for a street or street/strip engine, but they produce a huge reduction in friction as well. One Set includes 16 lifters complete with guide bars. Must be used with a HYDRAULIC ROLLER CAM only. Cannot be used with standard iron cam, or even a standard roller cam.

Part No: 200-1088 - Hydraulic Roller Retrofit Lifters - Set of 16 - Price: $299.95
