Rear Seal Caps

The rear seal cap holds the bottom half of the rear seal to the crank and provides a surface for the oil pan to seal up against. We offer brand new billet aluminum versions as well as refinished factory units (when in stock.) From the factory, two versions were originally used. An early version was used from the beginning of production (1958) until 1961 as Chrysler part number 1821389. In 1962, there was a major redesign of the rear of the engine which included changes in the crank flange, torque converter/flexplate, etc. Among these changes came a different rear seal cap, which we refer to as the LATE style version. This cap used Chrysler part number 2128895, and was used until the end of production. It is the correct cap for 99% of applications.

As a tech tip, if you are having problems with rear main seal leaks, have your machine shop surface a small amount of material (approx. .010") off the bottom of the rear seal cap using their Rod/Main cap cutter. This will hold the seal more tightly against the crank and solve many leak problems.

Our billet aluminum rear seal cap is fully CNC machined from a solid block of 6061 T-6. We make them slightly wider than the original factory units so there's no slop when it fits up into the block, which helps to avoid leaks. Don't forget the special countersunk bolts below.

Part No: 200-1031 - Rear Main Seal Cap - Billet Aluminum - Price: $39.95

Rear Main Seal Cap Bolts. These are the very specialized countersunk bolts that hold the Aluminum Rear main seal cap to the block. These are BRAND NEW, and feature some design improvements over the original factory bolts, such as a thicker underhead washer surface. The 3/8" 12 point wrench surface on the originals can become rounded off, and removal then requires basically destroying the rear main seal cap, so go with these brand new ones for extra insurance. Sold in sets of 2. Use one set per engine.

Part No: 109-1501 - Rear Seal Cap Bolts - Set of 2 - New - Price: $9.95

Here is a front and rear view of our standard USED rear main seal cap. We refinish these nicely and and nothing wears on them, so there should be very little difference from a new one. Used from 1962 to end of production. Chrysler Part number 2128895.

Part No: 100-1032 - Rear Main Seal Cap - Late Style - USED. Price: $NA

Shown above is the difference between early and late seal caps. There are a few improvements that were built into the later caps. On the early caps (Chrysler number 1821389, shown on the right), the bolt holes for the oil pan bolts go completely through the cap, and can allow oil to seep around the bolt threads and leak. In the later cap, the bolt holes are sealed off, although sometimes people use too long of a bolt in this application and "break though" the backside of the cap. If this happens, a little silicone on the bolt threads should stop any leaks. Also, notice the side sealing strips have been made much wider in the later version. We have the early style caps for sale on a very limited basis.

Part No: 100-1031 - Rear Main Seal Cap - Early Style - USED. Price: $79.95
